During the early twentieth century, the small or medium-sized farm, worked mainly as a family concern, was the typical unit of Irish agriculture. Muckross Traditional Farms depict this rural life, during the 1930s and 1940s, prior to rural electrification and widespread mechanisation.

The Farms include a small, a medium-sized and a large holding. There is also a Labourer's Cottage, a Carpenter's Workshop and a Blacksmith's Forge. Each farm dwelling reflects the size of its' individual land holding and is furnished in traditional style.
